Book Editing

(Light) Copyediting
($0.01 – $0.015 per word, $15.00 minimum)

Copyediting focuses on the mechanics of the text following the rules of a given style guide. Copyediting encompasses editing for advanced grammar, punctuation, citing, consistency, clarity, and style errors. My process includes correcting obvious mistakes and working with the author on more significant clarity issues. I am most familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style, and The Associated Press Stylebook, but I can work with any style needed.

This service is for writers of fiction or non-fiction works of any length or genre that have already been developmentally edited and line-edited.

Line Editing
($0.025 – $0.03 per word, $30 minimum)

Line editing is an in-depth look at the tone and structure of the text. Line editing means going line by line to ensure everything flows naturally in a precise and consistent manner. Typical line edits will look at the uses of voice, syntax, word choice, punctuation, style choices, filter words, dialogue, and pacing to offer suggestions on how best to draw in readers. Line editing is a form of substantive editing best done after developmental editing and before copy editing.

This service is for writers of fiction and non-fiction who have finished their document after working with a developmental editor. Line editing will punch up your text to be more entertaining to readers.

Proofreading

Proofreading
($0.01 per word, $10.00 minimum)

Proofreading is the last step before publication, which encompasses a final quality check with minor grammar, spelling, and style corrections. I will also review the typesetting and layout of the manuscript making minor corrections according to the style guide.

This service is for fiction or non-fiction writers with a ‘Proof’ of their text: i.e., a manuscript that has undergone developmental and copy editing and is typeset and formatted for print. Proofreading is the final step to ensuring quality before publication.

All rates vary depending on the scope of work needed.

If you are unsure what type of editing you need, send in up to 1,000 words for a sample edit, and I can determine the best option for the text.

How it Works

After working on your manuscript, I will read it several times and make notes. We can meet at multiple points to discuss the changes so you stay updated on my progress. I use Microsoft Word to keep the original document and make two copies for editing.

I will make minor spelling and grammar corrections on the first copy while documenting them with “Track Changes”. For more extensive edits that change the tone or purpose of the manuscript, I will leave a comment on the document and discuss them in a meeting with you.

I will make the same corrections and comments on the second copy but make it a “Clean Copy” (i.e., a copy with all corrections implemented without notation for easy use).

If you do not have a style sheet or preferred style guide, I can write a detailed stylesheet as I edit and then provide this to you after I finish editing.
